Fabrication Spooling
We can help you be more efficient! It is not enough anymore to have a good drawing, your guys are still spending time in the shop figuring out angles, and spooling to make the piping arrangement work. Once the designed mechanical room is complete, the next step is "fabrication spooling" so your fabrication guys are getting a piece by piece view of the job!
Todays software allows you to do this in a very simple manner. Once the project piping arrangement is agreed to as a total package, we break it up into small manageable pieces that will bolt or weld together in the field with as little effort as possible! |
How does it work? This service is an extension of the Piping Design Services. We have a design that has been agreed to by all parties and now it's time to put it into action!
We use 3D piping design software to build our solutions for contractors, this will provide them with a 2D layout design, and a total 3D piping diagram of the entire system, or part of a system depending on how much you want to see. Now it time to get it built! For us to help you with this part, we need to take the design and break it into spools for you to hand to your fabrication guys to build the unitary pieces. We also give you a master 3D sketch with all the spool numbering to show where they go in the final assembly. Your individual spooling will include all the dimensional data needed to build the piece, the material list needed to the construction of the piece, the labeling required for the piece, and any other data needed like possibly test information, system information, area, etc. Once you have these it's time to build the job! |
What do the drawings look like?As we talked about previously, we work in 3D drawings so part of what you will see is a 3D view of each spool so your guys will have a good visual of the piece.
We have found over the years that most guys in the fabrication shop can work with 2D drawings but armed with a 3D view as well, there are less mistake and a much quicker turnaround time because they get it in their head much quicker. We want the same thing you want, ultimately, we only want to build it once! Along with the 3D view of the piece, you will also get a detailed material list showing every part and piece need to build the piece. This again helps so you can give this to someone to get ready to go for the fabricators. This again saves time! Finally, you get a 2D view of the piece completely dimensioned and shown in a manner that helps your guys build this quickly and correctly. The detailed identification information is on these drawings too, showing the piece number, the system, and anything else needed to build and get this piece where is goes on the job! |
What if something changes? What IF something changes? Now that is a forgone conclusion, right? Something always changes in the process of doing a project!
Sometimes even after the drawings have been signed off on and spooled, something has just changed, it could be minor or something completely major like the engineer has decided to use another brand of a chiller. This is usually, an accepted and normal event and with our software solution we can help get this completed for you in a relatively short amount of time. Value engineering can be the cause at times too, and we an help you with these activities as well. Maybe using a different type of material will save you on line sizing or routing. Maybe the building structure ha to be moved due to interference. Whatever the cause we can help you make the needed adjustments to the design and resulting spooling. Hopefully, the changes happen BEFORE fabrication starts but we will help you get your change order done as well if needed! |
How do we know it will fit? There is always some apprehension during the first major effort that a contractor goes through worrying about all the pieces fitting where they should go. This is real, but our processes are proven and have been tried an true for years now.
3D modeling works as long as the information we used for design was real and is accurate within reason. Let's be honest, if we follow good installation practices, and we can help you with that, everything will fit and you will look like a hero on your project when you get you mechanical room complete in a few days instead of a few weeks! |
